Thousands of pupils across Haringey are set to benefit from safer and healthier journeys under proposals for a ‘major expansion’ of Schools Streets.
Eleven new schemes covering 15 schools will support almost 7,000 children to walk, cycle and wheel to school and improve air quality and road safety at the school gates, according to Haringey Council.
It is hoped the new School Streets will replicate the success of the 23 already implemented in the borough as part of the Haringey Streets for People programme.
Cllr Mike Hakata, deputy leader and cabinet member for climate action, environment and transport, said: “Our ambitious and rapidly expanding School Streets programme is a key part of building a fairer, greener borough where children can travel to school in cleaner air and streets safe for walking and cycling.
“There is no doubt our School Streets are already transforming trips to school, and I’m delighted many more communities will have the opportunity to benefit from a safer and healthier start and end to the school day.”
School Streets aim to create safe walking and cycling zones outside schools for pupils at drop-off and pick-up during term-time.
Only people walking and cycling, and those with vehicle exemption permits, are eligible to enter the zone while the School Street is in operation.
Consultation is now underway to expand the scheme to the schools in 2022/23.
