Westminster sounds out residents on 20mph

LRSC Westminster 20mph
Westminster City Council has set out plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit across the borough.

The borough wide 20mph limit, which would apply to all roads apart from TfL red routes and those in the Royal Parks, is designed to make Westminster safer for vulnerable road users.

It follows the introduction of 20mph speed limits around 39 schools in the borough, a move which was supported by 73% of residents, who felt it would be safer to walk and cycle in their community.

Westminster Council says evidence suggests that reducing speeds reduces the severity of collisions, as well as making it safer to walk and cycle.

Tim Mitchell, Westminster City Council deputy leader, said: “The way people get around is changing and we need to respond.

“More of our residents and visitors want to walk or cycle, and fewer people are driving. Introducing a lower speed limit will help make sure our streets remain safe for all.

“Our trial 20mph limits around schools proved hugely popular – rolling these limits out across Westminster is the next logical step but we want to hear what people think first.”

The plans have been put out for public consultation, which closes on 10 December.

Earlier this month, TfL confirmed speed limits on central London roads will be reduced to 20mph from early next year, after receiving public support for the plans.
